NEW DELHI:The Finance Ministry and RBl plan to put in place a Tax Information Network (TIN) proposed by the Kelkar Task Force, in a bid to improve tax administration and check evasion.

A high-powered committee comprising officials of Ministry of Finance and RBI, is working on TIN and a framework would be finalised within this fiscal, official sources told PTI..


TIN OVERVIEW

National Securities Depository Ltd. (NSDL) after having modernised the settlement system in the Indian Capital Market by pioneering scripless settlement is now in the process of establishing a nationwide Tax Information Network (TIN) on behalf of the Income Tax Department (ITD). This is designed to make tax administration more effective, furnishing of returns convenient, reduce compliance cost and bring greater transparency.
The entities depositing the tax (deductors) vary substantially with respect to their computer skills and hence TIN design provides for TIN Facilitation Centres managed by NSDL to help digitisation and upload of tax payment related information to the TIN central system.

TIN FACILITATION CENTRES

NSDL has established TIN Facilitation Centres for receiving, digitisation and upload of e-TDS returns to the TIN central system.

TIN Facilitation Centres (TFC's) are setup in more than 200 locations specified by the Income Tax Department (ITD) across the country to facilitate deductors furnishing their e-TDS returns.

Activities carried out by these TIN Facilitation Centres would be to receive e-TDS returns, e-TCS returns & AIR from deductors and upload them to the Central TIN System.They shall also receive Form 49A (application for issuance of New PAN) and Form 49B (application for issuance of New TAN) from deductors.    ...more
